Though it’s renowned for its luxurious resorts, this coastal gem also boasts numerous budget-friendly hotels, allowing visitors to experience Costa Rica’s charm without breaking the bank.

On one of my trips, I stayed at The Palms at Coco Beach, thanks to recommendations from friends. I was pleasantly surprised by its affordability. This inspired me to find and share a list of the best budget hotels in Playas del Coco.

Playas del Coco is a lively place with lots of activities and a beautiful beach. If you’re traveling on a budget, here are some great hotel options that offer comfort and convenience without a high price. There’s something for everyone, from cozy spots near the beach to larger hotels with many amenities.

Coco is a small town with one street that has many restaurants, shops, and bars. Outside the town centre, you will find several small neighbourhoods. You can walk or use rental E-bikes, E-scooters, or golf carts. Accommodation options are plentiful, and you can find several budget hotels. 

Toro Blanco

Toro Blanco is 150 meters from the beach, 100 meters from Coco town, and next to the Coco water taxi. The hotel is 8 minutes from Playa Ocotal and 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport. Toro Blanco is near the Monkey Farm and Zi Lounge Restaurant. 

The hotel has seven rooms, each with a balcony or a patio to hang a hammock. Other amenities include free WiFi, a fully equipped kitchen or kitchenette, a T.V. air conditioning, and a private bathroom with hot water. There is also free parking if you have a rental car. 

There is a large pool with a self-serve pool bar where you can spend most afternoons. Alternatively, play at their Tennis Court or sunbathe on the sundeck. You can also get BBQ facilities to host a few friends. Each morning, you get a complimentary Costa Rican traditional breakfast and coffee.  

Hotel M&M Beach House

Known for having the best onsite breakfast restaurant in Playas del Coco, Hotel M&M is five minutes from the beach. Hence, during the busy tourist months, expect some noise from across the beach or the park. The hotel is 25 km from Liberia International Airport, and paid transfer requests are available upon request. 

Hotel M&M has three room options: double, triple, and quadruple. Each of the 17 rooms has a cable TV, WiFi, a wardrobe, a private bathroom, and a seating area. Free car parking and a swimming pool are also available. Amenities at the hotel include the following.

• Snack/drinks vending machine
• Airport transfer services. 

Enjoy your complimentary breakfast every morning at the hotel’s terrace overlooking the sea. You can request the hotel to arrange a fishing tour for you and your family, and they will provide all the necessary equipment.

Hotel Villa del Sol is the ideal place if you’re looking for a resort on a budget. It’s a few meters from the beach in a perfect, quiet location with private parking. The grounds are well-kept and have several seating areas to relax, read a book, or watch the sunset. 

You can choose to stay in the hotel rooms or the hotel’s studio apartments in a separate building. Guests in the rooms get a complimentary breakfast comprising traditional Costa Rican foods. Some of the rooms have private balconies facing the garden. 

Room amenities include free WiFi, a safety deposit box, a coffee machine, a flat-screen TV fridge, and a wardrobe. Some hotel rooms might contain an oven, dishwasher, and microwave. 

Hotel La Puerta del Sol

Hotel La Puerta del Sol is at the centre of the town but lacks the chaos of downtown noise. It’s less than five minutes away from the beach. Playa Ocotal is 15 minutes away from Hotel La Puerta del Sol. Recreational facilities provided by the hotel include a swimming pool, a garden, and a spa.  

I loved this hotel the most, as it has a vibrant nightlife. Their Garden Bar has live music or other theme events on specific nights. It might be more expensive than the other budget hotels mentioned in this article, but it offers excellent facilities. 

Hotel La Puerta del Sol has ten air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, cable TV, and a bathroom with showers and a hairdryer. Amenities include coffee/tea makers, ceiling fans, and daily housekeeping. You can have your meals at their onsite restaurant, which serves delicious local and international cuisine.

The Palms at Coco Beach

My husband and I loved this hotel. It has an onsite restaurant and Bar. There is live music in the bar on Saturday evenings. Palms is 20 minutes from Liberia International Airport. Playas del Coco is 2 minutes away while the town centre is 3 minutes away. 

The hotel has a large freshwater pool for cooling down during those hot afternoons in Costa Rica. Their onsite restaurant can serve your meals at the pool. Enjoy some chilli guaros and chicken mushroom alfredo. Their meals are excellent, and I recommend you visit their restaurant even if you are not staying there.

I discovered this hotel through its famous restaurant. It’s the best place to have traditional Costa Rican dishes as you sip your beer. For international cuisine, you can walk to the La Dolce Vita restaurant, which is nearby. Interestingly, I discovered it has a hotel with many leisure facilities, such as a solarium and an outdoor swimming pool. 

Cafe de Playa Beach Front Suites gives you a choice between family suites and smaller rooms for couples or individuals. The beach is 300 meters from the hotel and 32 minutes from Liberia International Airport. The town center is 20 minutes away.  

You can choose between a Deluxe Family Suite and a Deluxe Junior Suite: WiFi, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, and a private bathroom. The rooms are very spacious and have a view of the sea.

Coco Beach Hotel

Coco Beach Hotel is opposite Coconutz, which is on the main street. The hotel is next to Sloppy Pelican Casino. You only need to walk five minutes, and you are at the beach. Liberia International Airport is 25 minutes away. 

The hotel has an agreement with Coco Bay Estates for the hotel’s guests to use all the amenities for free use. The facilities include pools, a tennis court, a gym, and horse riding. Coco Beach Hotel can also arrange tours to the nearby Rincón de la Vieja and Arenal National Parks. 

Coco Beach Hotel has 25 rooms with air conditioning in each room. Each room has the following facilities.

Nacazcol Hotel & Villas is a family-friendly hotel 20km from Liberia International Airport. Apart from the beach, its most famous attraction is near Iglesia Catolica de Playas del Coco Church. 

The hotel is massive as it has 124 rooms with a choice of a double room or triple room. Amenities for each room include free WiFi, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a private safe, a sofa, a private bathroom with a hair dryer, and an ironing set. You must order breakfast or eat at one of their two onsite restaurants. 

The hotel has a lounge bar where you can relax in the evening. There is also a swimming pool, a spa area and children’s play equipment.
