Costa Rica is world famous for it’s beaches.  Everyone has their own preferences on beach activities, and the topic of what is the best beach in Costa Rica is often debated.  This guide is based on living in Costa Rica, taking in most of the Costa Rica beaches for sometimes months at a time, and offers input on what makes each one unique.

The southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, including popular destinations like Malpais and Santa Teresa Beach, offers beautiful landscapes and great surf conditions, making it a must-visit for surfers and travelers seeking a laid-back beach atmosphere.

From the renowned surf Mecca of Tamarindo Beach to the less crowded shores of Santa Teresa and Jacó Beach, the Pacific Coast offers a range of surfing experiences to suit all levels. Tamarindo Beach

Playa Tamarindo is one of the most popular beaches on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, known for its well-developed tourist infrastructure, raging night life, and nature-based activities.

Located in the Guanacaste province, Tamarindo Beach is a must-visit for any surfer. With waves that cater to both beginners and seasoned surfers, it’s no wonder why this beach is a favorite among the surf community. The best time to catch some waves? From December to April during the dry season.

Beyond being a surf haven, Tamarindo is also renowned for its vibrant nightlife, featuring a wide variety of bars and clubs where you’ll find everyone unwinding and dancing away the night.  

If being in a party town is your thing, you’ll want to decide between Tamarindo or Jaco.  My guide shares pro’s and con’s of each.

Playa Conchal

Perhaps my favorite place is the private community that is around Playa Conchal. Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, this area is known for its well-developed tourist infrastructure and abundance of nature-based activities. This beach gets its name from the white shells that line the sand there, and it’s a thing of beauty!

Playa Conchal is the perfect white sand beach to unwind and take in the gorgeous scenery, and there are a number of activities like jet skiing, surfing, or just chilling in the sand!

Santa Teresa & Playa Carmen

If the crowds at Tamarindo Beach aren’t your vibe, then head to Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen. Located on the rugged Nicoya Peninsula along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, these two beaches offer a more secluded surfing experience. The area is known for its well-developed tourist infrastructure, popular beach towns, and nature-based activities. The waves here cater to all skill levels, offering consistent conditions especially during the wet season from May to August.

Surfing lessons are also readily available, with surf schools like Santa Teresa Surf Lessons and Tiqui Surf Academy offering classes for beginners and advanced surfers alike. The area is also rich in natural beauty, presenting ample opportunities for exploration and relaxation at Santa Teresa Beach, also known as Playa Santa Teresa. From horseback riding on the beach to exploring the local wildlife, there’s something for everyone in Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen.

Jacó Beach

Nestled along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, Jacó Beach is another fantastic spot for surfers. The beach is known for its clean groundswells and consistent left and right-hand waves, making it a perfect spot for beginners. Yet surfing is not the sole attraction of Jacó Beach. The town itself is teeming with life and provides a variety of attractions, ranging from Royal Butterflies to Pura Vida Gardens and Waterfalls. Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is well-developed for tourism, featuring popular beach towns and numerous nature-based activities, making it a prime destination for travelers.

When it comes to nightlife, Jacó Beach does not disappoint. With a variety of bars and clubs like Republik Lounge and Monkey Bar, there’s never a dull moment in this lively beach town. I will say this isn’t my favorite beach, but it’s one I’ve been to a lot because it was so easy to get to from San Jose’s suburbs, which I used to live in. It’s a black sand beach, and I prefer the lush white sand beaches of Guanacaste, but to each, their own!

I prefer to stay just outside Jaco in the Los Suenos Marriott Resort & Marina.  It’s just a few kilometers out of town, is fully gated, private, and offers a TON of amenities as well as close proximity to Jaco.

Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast

Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo
