Our hometown of Weston seriously lacks in the authentic Mexican food department, until now! We were delighted just last year when we heard El Gallo Taqueria was being opened in Weston Commons, so we had to give it a try. In fact, we gave it many tries, and it’s quickly become our top pick for authentic Mexican food in Weston!
Today I’ll share my full El Gallo Taqueria review in hopes of spreading the word about a place we’ve firmly put in our food rotation!
El Gallo Taqueria Mexican Restaurant in Weston, Florida
As I mentioned earlier Weston lacks authentic Mexican food. Sure, there are a few places you can get a taco, and of course, we have a Chipotle, but I’m talking about something authentic. We used to drive outside of Weston and hit up the many Mexican restaurants around Fort Lauderdale, which isn’t far, but for those nights we just don’t feel like driving 15 minutes or want to get a quick Uber Eats, El Gallo Taqueria hits the spot.
The group that opened this quaint, charming little abode are the same owners of Little Hen in Weston. Little Hen has always been a favorite of ours and my only complaint is it’s always packed! When you walk into El Gallo, you’ll notice the decor gives you the same classy vibe, albeit in a setting that makes you feel like you are in Mexico instead of France. Far from a hole in the wall, this gives a vibe of “this may be really expensive,” but it’s moderately priced when you consider the prices of tacos and burritos elsewhere these days.
As you can see, the first few tables resemble the set-up at Little Hen. Classy, intimate, and quaint.
Here’s a shot at the rest of the dining area:
When you look at this photo, can you see the old Jimmy John’s location shine through?
It’s hard not to notice that the counter stayed in the same place, but they really classed it up!
El Gallo Taqueria Menu
While the restaurant is done well and is very appealing, we don’t come here to give out interior design awards – we’re here for the food! If I’m being honest, some of the best Mexican food in the world that I’ve had were in places that aren’t that attractive on the inside. I’m thinking about ones in Southern California, Mexico, and even locally, Bien Chido. (Which if you haven’t been, I fully recommend it. It’s located in Plantation.)
Guac & Chips
A staple in Mexican cuisine, you have options of chips and guacamole as well as chips and pico de gallo. I prefer the guacamole, personally. Here’s a shot of our last take out order:
The chips are sturdy and taste like they are baked fresh. Either that, or they have the same supplier as Bodega in Fort Lauderdale, because they have the same type of chips, but they taste a little more salty at Bodega in my opinion. Both are delicious and offer a great way to start off your experience at El Gallo Taqueria.
Street Tacos
You have many options when it comes to street tacos at El Gallo, including:
- Carne Asada
- Chicken
- Chicken Tinga
- Short Ribs
- Impossible Meat
- Carnitas
- Shrimp
- Barbacoa
All come with varied toppings such as onions, cilantro, pickled pineapple, pico de gallo, and guacamole. They are all similar, with small variances, depending on which protein you choose. I find the tortillas to be very good and the ingredients extremely fresh. You can’t go wrong with a street taco here and I’m a huge fan of the Chicken Tinga.
Quesadillas
The quesadillas here come in all the aforementioned flavors that I mentioned in the tacos section, as well as an option to do one with mushrooms as your main ingredient, and oddly, they don’t offer a version of quesadillas featuring shrimp.
Burritos
This is my go-to! Nothing against the street tacos, but I find the burrito to be a little more filling. These are flour tortillas stuffed with lettuce, corn, beans, rice, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, and crema Mexicana. You can get one of their many flavors of sauce on the side and insert it to your own liking. I always prefer spicy food, so I go with the XXX Serrano.
Chilaquiles
The chilaquiles are an item I have yet to sample yet, largely because of my infatuation with the street tacos and my beloved burrito, but when I lived in Escazu Costa Rica there was a restaurant that I ate this dish at about every week and I’m a huge fan of chilaquiles.
El Gallo make’s theirs with tortilla chips, onions, cheese, micro cilantro; salsa verde and crema mexicana on the side. You have the options of the following flavors:
- Chicken
- Carnitas
- Impossible
- Original
- Carne Asada
- Barbacoa
Other than drinks, that’s a wrap! It’s worth mentioning that they offer a few cocktails that are wine based, so if you dine in, you have that option. I have yet to sample them, but when I do, I’ll come back and update this review.
El Gallo Taqueria Reviews
In terms of giving the City of Weston an authentic Mexican experience with a simple menu and fair prices, El Gallo hits the spot! I find the food very tasty, consistent, and something we eat every couple weeks. We usually pick up lunch there to avoid the Uber Eats fees, and the service is always on point. I really can’t say enough good things about El Gallo in Weston, and they’ve earned our business. As far as what other people are saying online, they seem to agree with me. The very hard to impress Yelp crowd has them at a steady 4.0 rating. All of the most recent El Gallo reviews are 5 star, with the 1 star review that I surfed into complaining about portion size. I’ll say that the street tacos do satisfy me, but some friends of mine have craved more, which is why I opt for the burrito. It’s slightly smaller than a chipotle burrito, but on an ingredient to ingredient comparison, there is no comparison. El Gallo wins hands down any day of the week. I continued to look at the other 1 star reviews, and since this place is fairly new, the low amount of ratings really bog down the score to a 4.0 or it would be much higher, but the same thing was mentioned in their rating – they mentioned the portion sizes were small.
Hey, I say just order some chips and guacamole with your order and the problem is solved. But that’s just me.
