Best Sushi in Fort Lauderdale

I never tried sushi until the year 2001, but once I did, I was instantly addicted! As a seafood lover growing up in the midwest, where it’s not as popular, moving to South Florida opened up my eyes to consuming raw fish, fancy rolls, and experience the great Japanese cuisine.

After spending several years in South Beach, I moved up to Fort Lauderdale and have called the area home for over 15 years. As time has gone on, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting some of the best sushi restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. This is my recap of all my favorite venues, and it spans from Fort Lauderdale all the way to the west suburbs.

Sushi Fort Lauderdale – My Complete Guide

I’m going to start with the higher end, more expensive options and get those out of the way. Sushi doesn’t always have to be uber expensive, but for that big night out where you want a first class experience and don’t mind spending money, there are some options for you here in Fort Lauderdale.

Takato

This masterful restaurant is located in the Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach and is the pinnacle of fine dining and a great atmosphere in terms of Japanese cuisine in Fort Lauderdale. Featuring a 26 foot “must see it to believe it” sushi bar and indoor and outdoor dining in front of the ocean, I found Takato pricy – yet worth it. The menu also has Japanese favorites such as wagyu, a full bar, and the freshest sushi and Umami ingredients you could wish for.

Casa Sensei

Pan Asian flavors meet a Cheesecake Factory style menu offering literally anything you could think of, including some of the freshest sushi you’ll find. This venue isn’t just sushi – it’s Latin American infusions blended with Asian flavors are one of a kind. The venue is perched on top of the Himmarshee Canal as you head east on restaurant rich Las Olas Boulevard. Come for sushi, sample the other items, and know you have plenty of options at Casa Sensei.

Kuro

A little off the beaten path with it’s Hard Rock Casino location but I’m including it to be fair as many locals don’t mind traveling for this elegant setting offering an amazing otoro (bluefin tuna) and a contemporary take on sushi. They even offer a lavish Sunday brunch menu that is worthy of it’s $100 price tag. Don’t sleep on Kuro, and make sure to book ahead of time, especially in the high tourism season that South Florida is famous for.

Koume

Getting more cozy now that we are done with the high end sushi in Fort Lauderdale, let’s dive into the more local spots. Koume’s owner, “Toshi,” has a rock star status in the community as he is the sushi provider for Amerant arena, home of the Florida Panthers. Located in Plantation, this venue is a must see to believe. Each dish comes out with an action figure, normally an anime theme, and quirky, yet fun decorations all around the venue and on your dish. A huge menu offers sushi, sashimi, dumplings, and much more. If it’s a casual, yet tasty meal you seek, this is one of the best sushi restaurants west of Fort Lauderdale.

Otoro

Another gem in Plantation, you’ll find a more traditional sushi venue that even offers Omakase. Otoro has become one of our favorite venues for fresh sushi and sashimi as it’s quality is up there with the best of them, but without the price tag. Otoro is located off of University Drive just north of 595 in an otherwise unpretentious shopping center. Don’t let that deter you! Once you step inside you’ll find traditional Japanese decor, a full bar, and great sushi.

Ke-uH

The most tidy space in Weston that is the only game in town serving Toro, you can never go wrong at Ke-uH. This venue is the most expensive in town for a reason! Fresh fish, eclectic takes on rolls, and many sushi options you won’t find on the west side of town make this a local’s favorite.

Marumi

Getting back to Plantation, which has the area’s most dense Asian population, we have the cult classic in Marumi. You’ll find everything from toro, to sea urchin, to rolls made with crispy fried rice. Once we were at the now defunct Sushi by Bou in Las Olas and spoke to a couple that called it their favorite sushi venue in Florida. You’ll be hard pressed to hear opinions that don’t put it up there with the top sushi in Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas.

While there are hundreds of sushi restaurants in the Fort Lauderdale area, those are my go-to venues. The vibe, dress code, and decor range greatly in all of those restaurants so there is something for everyone on this list. I enjoy a five star fancy dinner as much as a hole in the wall serving great food, so if you select from that list, you can’t go wrong.

In closing, here are some others that I enjoy from time to time.

Sushi Restaurants in Fort Lauderdale Worth Mentioning

Sushi Rocks – located on Las Olas, is a quaint location with a large, diverse menu.

S3 (Sun, Surf, Sand) – while not a full on sushi restaurant, this beach front venue on A1A in Fort Lauderdale has a substantial sushi menu and for a place that doesn’t specialize in one thing, it’s quite good and provides a great ocean front vibe.

Katana Cocina Nikkei – another one in Weston that opened in 2024, you can read our full review here.

Suri Sushi Thai – if you are undecided on which way to go, this Weston venue provides both sushi and thai offers while also making a mean ramen. Read more here.

Sushi Song – multiple locations in Broward County. We like the Himarshee street location the best.

Jasmine Thai & Sushi – located in Margate and famous for their “Sex on the Moon” roll.

Summary

This post will be updated as new sushi restaurants open in the Fort Lauderdale area. If you have any that I haven’t listed here and need to try, the comments are open and I welcome your feedback!
