Marriott Bonvoy Status Levels Explained

I joined the Bonvoy Program many years ago an am certainly glad I did. With so many great hotels under the Marriott hotels umbrella, I figured why not see where it gets me? After numerous upgrades, free nights, and other perks, I’m here to explain to you how each level of status works as well as what you need to do to move on to the next tier.

After reading this guide, you’ll be equipped to enhance your travels with Marriott Bonvoy effectively.

Marriott Bonvoy Elite Tiers

Bonvoy Status Levels in a Nutshell

For starters, the Marriott hotel brands member benefits program is called “Bonvoy.” Inside Bonvoy there are five status levels: Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador. Let’s start at the bottom and work out way up to the very hard to achieve Ambassador elite status.

Silver Elite Status

As the first step in your marriott status journey we have Silver elite status. You can unlock this status level by earning 10 qualifying nights at Marriott properties within a calendar year. With this level, you’ll earn a priority late checkout, which is subject to availability, of course.

On top of that, you’ll earn a 10% bonus on every hotel stay which will amplify your points for each stay you make. This may not sound like much, but if you continue reading you’ll learn my secret to making the bonus points go well beyond that!

Bonvoy Gold Elite Status

Marriott bonvoy gold elite can be achieved by earning 25 qualifying nights in a calendar year. Graduating from silver elite status to Gold elite status earns you the right to request a 2 p.m. late checkout. Whether it’s needing more time before a flight, or just wanting to add another activity to the morning before you leave, having a room extended can be a great perk.

Gold elite status also allows you the ability to be rewarded room upgrades and a welcome gift when you check in. Welcome gifts range from a free breakfast offering to bonus points added to your account. You will be given the option to choose which one you want.

Pro Tip: at a higher end property like a Ritz Carlton, which is one of the participating hotels inside the Marriott hotels brand, breakfast can run over $50 as they are typically luxury buffets. In those scenarios, I always choose the breakfast vs. the points.

Marriott bonvoy gold elite members earn 25% more Marriott Bonvoy points on their stays.

Platinum Status

Platinum elite status is the next tier on the Marriott bonvoy program. You can earn this after 50 qualifying nights. This tier supplies substantial benefits and much greater chance of earning an upgraded room when you book a stay at participating hotels.

The first major benefit that Platinum elite members earn is private lounge access. These lounges all range in what they offer, but many times have a continental breakfast, free bottled water, soda, and even beer, wine, and sometimes at higher end properties, liquor. The most lavish one I’ve seen was at the Hotel Arts in Barcelona. This featured a full liquor bar where you can make your own drinks. They even had dozens of flavors of tonic water for their special gin & tonics!

Platinum elite members also earn five nightly upgrade awards each year. You can use this to upgrade to a suite, an ocean view, or a 1 or 2 bedroom suite based on availability.

Platinum elite members also get to pick an annual choice benefit once you earn 50 qualifying nights which can be either be free night awards or elite night credits.

Lastly, Platinum elite members earn 50% bonus points on their stays with marriott bonvoy as well as a 4 p.m. late checkout.

Titanium Elite Status

I’ve had this a few times and I have to say, they really make sure to give you a warm welcome when you check in and they pull up your account. Titanium elite status is earned at 75 qualifying nights. You’ll instantly earn a complimentary breakfast with the titanium elite level of status on your stays with marriott bonvoy. Obviously, you get everything the Platinum elite members get as well, such as the lounge access and nightly upgrade awards. Titanium elite benefits add even more status, more chances of upgrades, and more clout with Marriott.

In addition, Titanium elite members get bonus points to the tune of 75% on their stays with Marriott Bonvoy as well as a 4 p.m. late checkout.

As an aside, we stayed at various Marriott hotels in Costa Rica during a two week trip and having Titanium elite status earned us CRAZY upgrades, even plunge pools and expansive corner suites, from having this status.

Ambassador Elite Status

The pinnacle of the status, the ambassador elite members are a rare breed. This is the only level I’ve personally never unlocked thus far, but it’s a goal of mine when world travel replaces living at home for the majority of the year. The Ambassador elite status is unlocked with 100 qualifying nights as well as a qualifying spend of at least $23,000 USD in a calendar year in Marriott properties or on the Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection cruise ships.

The Ambassador Elite status earns you all of the perks that the Titanium elite members earn as well as a personalized ambassador service and a benefit called “Your24.” This perk offers members the option to choose their own check in and checkout time offering a flexibility no other hotel chain offers.

More on Marriott Ambassador Service

As if the member benefits weren’t enough already, the Ambassador service raise the bar in hospitality. With this service you’ll earn the exclusive Marriott Ambassador customer service phone number. This helps you when you want to make sure you have an enhanced room upgrade, as the ambassador can contact the hotel on your behalf and make this happen for you. Of course, you get everything mentioned in all past Bonvoy levels, and more.

They can also help you with special requests and trip personalization. For example, if you are celebrating something special and want flowers or chocolates in your room upon arrival, just contact them.

Lastly, since an Ambassador elite is held in very high regard, an ambassador handling your travel plans can assist with any problems you have. It’s almost like a “fixer,” although they do have limits! If you have any problems during your stay, the ambassador hotline should be your first call. The best part is, you won’t be put through to an offshore call center and then gradually put on hold, connected with an agent, and spending hours on the phone. This is an elite club to be in and the ultimate experience.

How to Earn Elite Night Credits

Hotel Stays and Nights Counted

The obvious way to earn elite status and elite night credits is by staying within Marriott participating hotels. That’s the most cut and dry way to earn a night in the Marriott Bonvoy program.

However, there are other ways. A main way I earn elite night credits is by using the Marriott Bonvoy credit card.

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold® credit card, for example, earns you 15 Elite Night Credits, while the Brilliant® and Bevy™ cards offer complimentary Gold and Platinum Elite statuses along with 15 and 25 Elite Night Credits, respectively. These credit cards also offer exclusive offers and promotions, such as bonus points for meeting spending thresholds, giving you further advantage for being a Marriott Bonvoy member.

This is also the easiest way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points, in my opinion. I tend to use the card even more near the end of the year to push me to Platinum elite or Titanium elite, depending on our travels for the year. Not only does your spend get you closer to earning elite night credits, but every dollar is at LEAST one Marriott Bonvoy point. There are numerous ways to earn points multipliers, such as using the card at gas stations, grocery stores, and dining establishments. In these cases, you will earn 3 points for every dollar spent. This does have a yearly cap, however, of your first $6,000 spent.

Another major hack when using these cards is to use it at a Marriott Bonvoy property each time you stay. When you pay for your stay with these cards, you earn 6x on your points.

Bonus Points and Promotions

Simply check your email from time to time and you’ll be amazed at how many promotions are sent out by Marriott Bonvoy. You can earn points multipliers as well as earn night credits by taking advantage of promotional periods (usually shoulder season travel) and to destinations they have highlighted. A recent promotion was along the lines of “stay 3 nights and get credited for 4.”

Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty Program – Lifetime Status

There are ways you can achieve lifetime status with the Marriott Bonvoy Loyalty program.

  • Lifetime Silver Elite 250 lifetime qualifying nights and 5 years as Silver Elite or higher.
  • Lifetime Gold Elite: 400 lifetime qualifying nights and 7 years as Gold Elite or higher.
  • Lifetime Platinum Elite: 600 lifetime qualifying nights and 10 years as Platinum Elite or higher.

I’m personally currently at lifetime Bonvoy gold elite status but in a few years should be lifetime Platinum elite status. Having a Platinum elite status for the rest of my life would be huge, as that’s where the major jump in bonuses come into play.

Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status in Summary

Silver elite status is a starting point for everyone in the Marriott Bonvoy program each year. That is, unless you qualified for a lifetime status in the past. Gold elite is the next tier up and when benefits start becoming enhanced. Platinum elite gives you the best starting point at possibilities to earn upgrades whenever you stay at a Marriott property. Titanium elite status is very hard to get, but earns you an almost guarantee that you will be upgraded. Ambassador elite is the pinnacle of the program where you will be treated like royalty every time you stay at a Marriott Bonvoy associated property.
