I’m not kidding! This beautiful country has a great place where tourists can stop to go on a crocodile tour and see these impressive animals. It’s known as the Tárcoles River, which means “Rio Tarcoles” in Spanish.
If you’re heading to the surf-focused mini-city Jaco, plan to visit Manuel Antonio National Park, or just want to explore the South Pacific, Tarcoles River’s Crocodile Bridge will be a perfect stop. Learn more about this tourist spot here!

A Little Information About Tarcoles River
This iconic waterway marks the boundary of Carara National Park, spanning over 1,242 miles from its northern border and into the Pacific Ocean. Actually, two rivers meet here.
The Tarcoles River has a bit of a dark secret. Sadly, it’s one of the most polluted rivers in the country. However, it’s still a vital lifeline for countless wildlife species.
For example, the river itself is where many crocodiles live. But the entire region is home to many species, including exotic birds, monkeys, sloths, and the beautiful Scarlet macaws. Other reptiles can be easily seen in the area, too, such as the American crocodile, basilisks, iguanas, and alligators.
Plus, the river plays a crucial role in the country’s agricultural and electricity sectors, as it irrigates farmland and generates power.
While the government and local communities have been working hard to clean up the Tarcoles River, years of pollution have taken their toll, making it unsafe for swimming.
So, it’s best to admire this natural wonder from a distance. Just consider the sheer number of crocodiles that call it home! Swimming in these waters doesn’t sound very attractive now, does it?
If you’re lucky enough to be driving through the area, make sure to stop at the Crocodile Bridge. It’s a must-see spot where you can get to see these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.
Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge
The Crocodile Bridge is a popular stop for stretching your legs and relaxing while enjoying the country’s stunning views. Besides that, you’ll find plenty of amenities nearby, such as souvenir stands, restaurants, ice cream shops, and restrooms.
If you want to see these animals, just stay tuned. They can be found on either side of the bridge, just below the surface. Or, if you’re more adventurous, you can consider taking crocodile tours.
Either way, you’ll be amazed by their size and sheer numbers. The Tarcoles River has the highest concentration of American crocodiles in the world, and they’re massive!
Are You Ready to See the Crocodiles?
If you’re driving, there are parking spaces on both sides of the bridge. Unfortunately, car break-ins can be a common problem in this area, so be sure to secure your valuables, roll up your windows, and lock your doors.
Once you’re parked, head out onto the bridge. There’s a pedestrian barrier, but be careful when crossing the road, as cars can move quickly.
Are you taking a private shuttle? Ask your driver to make a stop. Public buses and other similar vehicles don’t usually stop here.
Just remember to be careful. While it’s tempting to get up close and personal with crocodiles, you shouldn’t do anything dangerous, such as hanging off the bridge or throwing food into the river. It’s possible to take stunning pictures from a safe distance, too!

How to Get to the Crocodile Bridge
If you’re going to Jaco, the Manuel Antonio National Park, the South Pacific, or the Osa Peninsula through the Costanera Sur Highway, also known as Route 34, you’ll pass over the Crocodile Bridge.
This attraction is located in a small town that shares the name with the river, Tarcoles, which is about 20 minutes north of Jaco.
If you’re at San Jose Airport, just follow these steps:
- Take Route 1
- Then get on Route 27
- Exit at Jaco
- Continue south on Route 34 for approximately 45 minutes
And that’s it! After that, you’ll be at the iconic Costa Rica Crocodile Bridge!

So, are you traveling along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast? You can’t miss a stop at the Tarcoles River!
The Crocodile Bridge is located 45 miles from the country’s capital, San Jose, which means that driving there will take about an hour and 20 minutes.
Fortunately, there are many transportation options. You can choose between a private transfer or a shared shuttle, for example. Cars are also available for rent.
Just use Google Maps to make sure you’re choosing the location that goes to the Tarcoles River, near Hacienda NOSAVAR, when visiting the Crocodile Bridge!
