When most people think of Chicago steakhouses, Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse is always near the top of the list. Known for its connection to Chicago sports legends and its notable designation of “Best Steakhouse in Chicago” based on a Chicago Tribune dining poll, Harry Caray’s is one of my favorites. It has an amazing menu, Italian charm, and pop culture memorabilia, combined with museum-quality sports items, beautifully crafted display cabinets, and, of course, the finest prime, aged steaks.
…think fine dining nestled within pop culture treasures, vintage newspapers, and an extensive collection of items from cinematic classics and pop culture icons.
Located in River North, the original Harry Caray’s is a sought-after restaurant and the perfect place to meet for special occasions. It’s a famous Chicago restaurant with a lot of lore. Naturally, we had to check it out.
There are also other locations around the city, including Harry Caray’s Tavern at Navy Pier, which I’ve also been to.
Do other people enjoy the mahogany paneled walls and Italian favorites here as much as I do? Do diners who come here enjoy the original newspapers, photographs, and rotating collection of treasures? Harry Caray’s is well-reviewed on other review sites, including Yelp and TripAdvisor.
On Yelp, there are more than 1,000 reviews for Harry Caray’s Chicago Italian Steakhouse. Some of the most positive reviews rave about the perfectly cooks steaks, generous portions, and the artifacts that are all around the restaurant and bar. Reviewers also mention the excellent service but believe the prices are a bit too high. Overall, guests on Yelp rate Harry Caray’s with 3.9/5-stars.
Reviewers on TripAdvisor rate Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse with a 4.3/5-star rating. Most people love the operation, and there were a number of reviews on the page stating the food was amazing, and the service was top-notch. Again, there were complaints about higher prices and difficulty getting reservations when they wanted them.
Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse Menu
The menu at Harry Caray’s combines Italian classics with steakhouse staples. Signature dishes include the bone-in ribeye, chicken Vesuvio, and linguine with clams.
When we went with a group, the table started with antipasti – fried calamari and burrata. Then, we ordered entrées ranging from seafood to house-made pastas. I had one of the hand-cut steaks, which of course, is the main attraction. It was cooked to perfection and paired with traditional sides like creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. The menu also offers vegetarian-friendly options and a strong wine list.
Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse Dress Code
The dress code at Harry Caray’s is best described as business casual. Many diners dress up for the experience, especially in the evenings, but a neat casual outfit is perfectly acceptable for lunch or early dinners. I did see people at the bar who were a bit more casual, as it’s a popular spot after events like baseball games.
