Road Trip Games to Play to Pass The Time

If you are looking for ways to spice up your car ride on a long road trip, I’ve got just the solution for you – ROAD TRIP GAMES!

I’ve found that fun road trip games not only bring people together and help them keep their sanity when taking long road trips, but it also makes the time pass much faster. Today I’m going to highlight some fun car games to play next time you decide to take a road trip.

Car Games for Your Next Road Trip

Let’s start with a great game that is so simple you can get the children involved – the license plate game.

License Plate Game

I’ve seen many variations of this game, including an APP that allows you to have less clutter but also assumes everyone playing has access to a smart phone. As the name suggests, this game focuses on discovering various license plates and earning points for each different plate spotted. There are even variations of license plates games that form a bingo card where the winner will essentially make a “bingo.”

Alphabet Game

This is a free game that is also good for children as it always keeps them busy and actively looking for word association. A classic game that’s been around for ages, the alphabet game is just that – a game that uses the alphabet to find objects that start with each letter.

The game is simple: players watch out the car windows during a drive, scanning road signs to find a word that begins with the letter A. Once that’s spotted, the search moves to B, then C, and so on through the alphabet until Z—when the game officially ends. My siblings and I played it constantly on family road trips. Some games stretched for hours: we’d begin as we pulled out of the city, lose momentum while driving through long stretches of fields or mountains, and then pick up right where we left off once we hit a more populated area. Of course, certain letters—like Q, X, and Z—were especially tough. Of course, this is when living by a Dairy Queen comes in handy!

My Favorite Road Trip Games on Amazon

If you are looking for something for adults, Amazon has a lot of great road trip games and other car games that will help you pass time as you travel.

I’m going to start that if it’s a car full of adults looking to laugh, nothing beats Cards Against Humanity.

While this is is a card game, it’s always taken along with us with our other road trip games as it always provides lasting memories and a lot of belly laughs – especially with new people who have never played the game.

I Should Have Known That

If you’re looking for a trivia game that flips the usual rules upside down, I Should Have Known That! might just be your new obsession. Unlike traditional trivia where you’re rewarded for correct answers, this clever little game takes a different approach—you don’t win points at all. Instead, you lose them every time you get something wrong. That means even the simplest questions can turn into hilarious brain twisters when the pressure is on.

With over 400 questions covering everyday knowledge, the game constantly teases you with things you feel like you should know—famous landmarks, everyday facts, pop culture references, and more. The catch? Without Google or Wikipedia in your pocket, suddenly the obvious isn’t so obvious. It’s amazing (and slightly embarrassing) how quickly your mind goes blank when everyone at the table is staring at you, waiting for an answer.

The beauty of I Should Have Known That! is that it’s not about being the smartest person in the room—it’s about laughing at the silly mistakes, the “oh no, I knew that!” realizations, and the good-natured ribbing that follows. Expect lots of facepalms, friendly heckling, and those classic Homer Simpson-style “D’oh!” moments when the answer is finally revealed.

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, having friends over for game night, or just want to liven up a family gathering, this game fits the bill. It’s fast, fun, and designed to get everyone involved—no need for encyclopedic knowledge, just a willingness to laugh at yourself. By the end of the night, you’ll have inside jokes, funny stories, and at least one person vowing revenge in the next round.

Simply put, I Should Have Known That! is trivia with a twist—less about showing off what you know and more about celebrating what you forgot. And honestly, that’s what makes it such a crowd-pleaser.

Fun Road Trip Games

Laughter makes the time go by much faster when traveling, so I put together a list of “LOL funny” games you can play on your next road trip. Here’s a few car games you can add to your collection and play along with your fellow travelers.

Highway Showdown

This game features 180 questions that mix history, pop culture, and random facts. It’s a great game for long road trips. Being compact, it makes for easy packing for any road trip.

You just need 2 or more players to partake in these trivia questions and it can be played with couples, families, travel buddies, whomever!

This game creates lasting memories through laughter – and what’s better than that?

Moose Master

I hate games that are over-complicated and hard to learn. Moose Master is just the opposite! You can learn the game and get started in mere seconds while you journey through your road trip.

Labeled as “a great ice breaker,” this game starts by having someone make two “moose rules” that everyone must follow. It can be something like “you can’t use a certain word when talking” or “you can’t call anyone by their first name.” So right there, you have a few things you have to pay attention to.

Simply draw a card, follow the instructions, and prepare to enjoy a lot of laughs!

First to Worst

This one is a multi-generational game where you try to get into each other’s heads. There are over 300 questions in this road trip game where you will have to guess what their “Ranker” ranked the answers in an order of 1-5. Almost like a little bit of Family Feud in a card game, if you will. You’ll be tasked with guessing the exact order of the Ranker and you’ll want to get more right than wrong in order to win the game.

This is a good gift as well. Perfect for a white elephant party gift or something to do with the family around the Holidays or at gatherings. It’s not just a game for road trips – you can play this at any time. However, the ease of transporting this game makes it one of the funny road trip games I recommend you check out.
