What is the Drinking Age in the Cayman Islands?

If you are looking to know the legal drinking age in the Cayman Islands, it’s the age of 18.  In fact, I had my first legal drink in this country back in 1997 and it was at that point I fell in love with Grand Cayman!

Today I’l share all of the drinking laws in the Cayman Islands so you know what to expect ahead of your visit.

Rum Point is a great place to get a drink with incredible views.

The legal drinking age is 18.  You can easily find liquor, beer, and wine in most convenience stores, grocers, and even gas stations.  Rum is the big drink in the Cayman Islands, and you’ll find plenty of it.  However, it’s worth noting that stores don’t sell any alcohol on Sunday’s, so you’ll have to go to a hotel, beach bar, or restaurant for that.

(I’m a huge fan of Coccoloba in the Kimpton if you are looking for a great beach bar.)

Be courteous of local laws and don’t carry any open containers in your vehicle or in an area that’s not specifically zoned for consumption of alcohol.  It’s legal to drink on the beach in the Cayman Islands, but always ask locals before just assuming the zone you are in is okay.  You can be fined by the local police upon being caught in an area not zoned for consumption.

If you stay at a hotel, like the Ritz Carlton or any other ones on Seven Mile Beach, you’ll be able to order drinks from their staff without issue.

Other Things to Know About Drinking Age in Grand Cayman

I will say that the country has a very strict policy about drinking and driving, so please be responsible and do not drive drunk or you’ll end up in jail with a long fight ahead of you.  The legal limit is .10.

It’s also illegal to purchase alcohol for a minor.

Expect to get carded pretty much everywhere.  There are strict laws governing bars and restaurants from serving minors, so they are very cautious with serving and will normally ask for an ID.  Do not be offended, they are just protecting the beautiful country and the tourism that brings in all the money.
