Entering Koume Japanese restaurant is like walking into a different planet. Inside this hidden gem located in Plantation, Florida, just east of the Sawgrass Mills Mall you’ll find a wall full of appreciation for the proprietor, Toshi. Hand written notes and drawings adorn one wall while a toy collection of various action heros, hello kitty trinkets, and anime figurines litter the other wall.
Enough with the decor, let’s get into my Koume review and you’ll see why this is now firmly entrenched in my rotation for sushi in Broward County!
Koume Japanese Restaurant – What to Expect
Now that you have the quirky, yet fun decor in your head, let’s get into why people come here.
For starters, they come to experience the charm of Mitsutoshi Toshi Sekita, the owner and host with the most. His charming personality greets every customer and his token “see you tomorrow” is his way of saying goodbye when you exit the venue.
We sat by the wall of appreciation on our first visit. It’s littered with drawings of “Toshi” as well as thank you notes from appreciative customers.
A quaint, yet very efficient sushi bar is on the back wall. The chefs add flair to every meal here by decorating each dish with an action figure or something from pop culture.
But how was the food, you ask?
OMG! Incredible.
We had a quick lunch here and started off with some shrimp shumai and a miso soup. Both were excellent. The lunch special menu has a lot to offer, as does the dinner menu. It’s a never ending palace full of every option you would expect in a Japanese restaurant.
I opted for a tuna sashimi platter for lunch and the fish was uber fresh. Some of the best fresh tuna I’ve had in Broward County – and that’s high praise given we have a lot of sushi restaurants to choose from, especially in the Sunrise, Plantation, and Weston suburbs on the west side of Fort Lauderdale.
The venue is cozy and welcomes everyone. I would estimate it seats about 30 people, give or take.
You’ll see a lot of mentions and even signed photos of the Florida Panthers in addition to some of the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders. There are even a lot of pictures of the Florida Panthers dance team in the venue and on his Instagram. Rumor has it that Toshi does all the Japanese catering for Amerant arena where the two time defending world champion Florida Panthers play – and I don’t doubt this legend.
The food did not disappoint and the experience was unforgettable. We will be back very soon and will update this review with even more photos of this hidden gem tucked away in a shopping center.
