Known for its natural beauty, Costa Rica is filled with topographic features, including mountains, volcanoes, beaches, rainforests, and, of course, lakes. I was immediately drawn to Costa Rica thanks to the stunning landscapes, and the entire country is like the ultimate playground for those who wish to explore. It doesn’t matter if you are drawn to the country for Costa Rica’s delicious food and tropical beaches or its bird-watching and hot springs; take my word for it — you don’t want to miss the lakes of Costa Rica.
Before We Dive Into the Lakes, Let’s Talk About the Importance of Water
I’m definitely going to tell you all about Costa Rica’s lakes, but before I do, I want to simply mention how important these bodies of water are to this country.
There is no doubt that water is life, and when you add the addition of stunning lakes to the already impressive natural landscapes, you can see why people from across the globe, including myself, are drawn to visit this extraordinary country.
Costa Rica’s Lakes are of the Utmost Importance
The ecosystem of Costa Rica could possibly be one of the most important in the world. With lush rainforests and beaches bustling with wildlife, immediately you can see the importance of lakes to the rest of the country.
The lakes of Costa Rica not only offer fresh water to the people who live on this island nation, but the flowing waters also offer habitats for reptiles, fish, birs, and other animals…some of which are only found in Costa Rica. The locals use the water for drinking, of course, but also for irrigation and farming, while tourists flock to the lakes for hiking, swimming, paddling, and more. Without the lakes of Costa Rica, I truly believe that the balance of nature, and even of life, would quickly fall apart.
Lake Arenal – The Most Important Lake in the Country
It would be impossible to talk about lakes in this country without talking about the crown jewel, Lake Arenal. It is the most famous lake, and since it is located near the Arenal Volcano, visitors to the area are treated to an area of the country they will not soon forget. Located in the Northern Highlands, Lake Arenal is a mecca for fishing, boating, sightseeing, and is often the highest point of any tourist’s Costa Rican adventure.
Things to Do Around Lake Arenal – You Don’t Want to Miss This!
- One of my favorite things to do around Lake Arenal is a boat cruise. Not only are you travelling in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano, you also have a chance to take in the area surrounding the lake and you can see much of the flora and fauna that are known in the area. It is a have for bird watching, too!
- Fishing is also popular in the Lake Arenal region. Some of the fish you can expect to find include tilapia, rainbow bass, and machaca. Arenal Lake is also known for the hiking trails that wind through the area, and you can even explore the majestic Arenal volcano, which is close! I had an excellent time fishing for rainbow bass the last time I was at Arenal Lake, and also was able to take some amazing photos of the panoramic views that the lake offers.
- When exploring the Arenal Volcano National Park, Don’t forget to check out the hot springs and hiking trails as well as the beauty of the rainforest. In fact, this area is also home to the Monteverde cloud forest, which is one of the world’s most rare forests. I can’t even start to describe the stunning beauty of this place.
- You won’t want to miss out, either on some of the nearby towns in the area surrounding Arenal Lake and Arenal Volcano. The town of La Fortuna, for instance, is a favorite of mine. It has a number of cultural opportunities available as well as a chance to check out native Costa Rican food, talk to the locals about the town, and even find the perfect place for once in a lifetime shopping experiences.
- Finally, I don’t want to forget to mention the amazing opportunity for water sports at Lake Arenal. Swimming, jet skiing, SUP, and numerous others adventure options await in the water. In the cooler months, the dependable winds attract windsurfers. If you aren’t a fan of the water, never fear. I highly recommend the hiking trails that surround the lake as well as biking and horseback riding opportunities. Make sure you don’t forget to check out the sunset, too.
Escape the Crowds and Explore Lake Cote
The one thing I will say about Lake Arenal is that it’s very well known, and thus, it’s a hot spots for tourists. If you have already taken advantage of seeing Arenal Lake or you want to do something different, I also recommend Lake Cote. Located in Limon, this is a peaceful and calm area that is generally a wonderful option for those who are looking for a low-key lake with many of the same opportunities that you will find on Lake Arenal.
Take in the Majestic Wildlife Around Lake Cote
- If you want to see the famous bird species of Costa Rica, like toucans, or find a place for good hiking around the largest lake in the country, Lake Cote is the place to be. Don’t forget a camera as you take in some of the best bird watching in the world, and if you look close, you will see that this famous lake is shaped like a heart.

- The hiking around the lake is breathtaking, and consider taking food and drinks, as you won’t find a better spot to sit on the beach and experience the peace of this sacred spot. The lake is a spiritual place for the local Maleiku people, and many claim that the lake is a hot spot for UFO sightings.
Don’t Forget Lake Nicoya, a Saltwater Lake You Can’t Miss!
Most lakes in the world are freshwater, but Lake Nicoya is a bit different. Made of saltwater and located along the Pacific side of Costa Rica, this is an unusual opportunity that you definitely want to add to your itinerary.
What You Can Experience at Lake Nicoya
- Mangroves abound around this lake, and with it comes an amazing array of wildlife including massive crocodiles, swinging monkeys, and birds that you won’t see anywhere else.
- A boat tour is one of my favorites ways to see Lake Nicoya, as you can learn about the area from locals and get an up close and personal view of how a mangrove ecosystem works.
- There are many islands in Lake Nicoya, and most of them offer access to beaches and water that I can only describe as like looking through glass.
- Since there is so much fishing around Lake Nicoya, you definitely want to stop into one of the local restaurants and try one of the mouth-watering seafood dishes that are on the menu.
- If you are like me and enjoy a day on the water, don’t miss out on the swimming, beaches, and relaxation that comes along the shores of Lake Nicoya.

The Ancient Lake Made from a Crater: Lake Barva
If you are around the Braulio Carrillo National Park, my best advice is to do yourself a favor and make a stop at Lake Barva. The water is a stunning green color, and if you are into local legends, you won’t be disappointed when talking to the locals about this lake.
